Discover the brushes used and their applications

Paddle Brush

Round / Barrel Brush

Round / Barrel Brush

Characteristics: Wide and flat base; large surface area; bristles usually firm but smooth.

Best for:

  • Long, straight or slightly wavy hair that needs smoothing and detangling.
  • Gentle brushing post-treatment to distribute natural oils and minimize friction.
  • Quick overall brushing when covering large sections.
Tip: Choose one with a comfortable handle and good support, as large flat brushes can fatigue the wrist in frequent use.

Round / Barrel Brush

Round / Barrel Brush

Round / Barrel Brush

Characteristics: A cylindrical barrel with bristles all around; often used with a blow-dryer to “roll” sections of hair.

Best for:

  • Creating lift at the root, volume, curls, or waves during blow-dry styling.
  • Medium to long hair where shaping is required (e.g., loose waves or soft curls).
Tip: Vary barrel size depending on hair length: e.g., smaller diameter for shorter hair, larger for long hair.

Vented Brush

Round / Barrel Brush

Detangling / Flexible Bristle Brush

Characteristics: Has openings/vents in the body allowing air to flow through; less resistance when drying.

Best for:

  • Speedy blow-drying sessions—especially useful for time-sensitive clients.
  • Thick or dense hair that takes longer to dry—vents help reduce drying time.
Tip: Choose a vented brush with a comfortable grip and heat-resistant material since it will be used intensively with hot tools.

Detangling / Flexible Bristle Brush

Boar-/Natural-Bristle Brush (Finishing/Smoothing)

Detangling / Flexible Bristle Brush

Characteristics: Bristles are flexible or well-spaced; often used on wet or damp hair to minimize breakage and snagging.

Best for:

  • Clients arriving for treatment with knotting, damage, or tangles.
  • Use in-shower or post-wash when the hair is fragile and needs gentle handling.
Tip: Ensure the brush is designed for wet/damp hair (check vendor specs) and that cleaning/hygiene protocols are well followed since these brushes are used often during treatments.

Boar-/Natural-Bristle Brush (Finishing/Smoothing)

Boar-/Natural-Bristle Brush (Finishing/Smoothing)

Boar-/Natural-Bristle Brush (Finishing/Smoothing)

Characteristics: Bristles of natural origin (e.g., boar) or mixed with synthetic; excellent for distributing scalp oils, adding shine, and smoothing the hair surface.

Best for:

  • Final finishing of blow‐outs or treatments where you want to elevate shine and smoothness.
  • Clients with fine to medium hair where gentler bristles reduce static and damage.
Tip: Good finishing tool. It may not be ideal for heavy detangling—reserve it for after the hair is already straightened or smoothed.

Teasing / Volume Brush

Boar-/Natural-Bristle Brush (Finishing/Smoothing)

Boar-/Natural-Bristle Brush (Finishing/Smoothing)

Characteristics: Brush (or comb) specifically designed to add volume, back-comb, lift roots—often with a narrow head and firm bristles.

Best for:

  • Styling up-dos, volumised looks, special-occasion hair.
  • Clients who want root lift, mass at crown, or extra “body” rather than smoothness.
Tip: Use carefully to avoid stressing the hair fibre—especially important if hair has been through treatment and is more fragile.
