Understanding Age-Related and Environmental Hair Damage

As we age, the natural rhythm of the hair growth cycle begins to change. The anagen (growth) phase becomes shorter, which means each strand spends less time actively growing. Over time, this results in:

  • Finer, shorter hairs
  • Reduced density
  • Weaker, more fragile strands

These intrinsic ageing processes are often intensified by external stressors. Everyday factors such as UV radiation, pollution, hard water, heat styling, aggressive brushing, and chemical treatments create oxidative stress in both the hair shaft and the scalp.
Oxidative stress leads to:

  • Cuticle erosion, making hair rough, dull, and prone to breakage
  • Cortex damage, reducing elasticity and compromising structural proteins (keratin)
  • Inflammation of the scalp, disturbing the environment necessary for healthy growth

Together, these mechanisms gradually weaken hair from root to tip, resulting in various common hair concerns.

Common Hair Concerns & Their Root Causes

✔ Thinning Hair

Thinning can present as reduced volume, a wider parting, or increased shedding. It may be linked to:

  • Genetics (androgenetic alopecia)
  • Hormonal fluctuations (postpartum, menopause, thyroid imbalance)
  • Chronic stress pushing hairs into the shedding phase
  • Nutritional deficiencies (iron, zinc, proteins, vitamin D)
  • Age-related follicle miniaturization

Regardless of the cause, thinning hair often requires a combined approach to improve follicle activity and extend the growth phase.

✔ Weak & Brittle Hair

When the cuticle becomes damaged or the cortex loses essential proteins and moisture, the hair loses its resilience.

This typically occurs due to:

  • Keratin depletion from chemical coloring, bleaching, or heat styling
  • Loss of lipids and moisture, making strands more porous
  • Mechanical damage from everyday grooming
  • Environmental exposure, especially UV and pollution

The result is hair that snaps easily, feels rough, and lacks shine. Bond-building and protein-replenishing treatments are often needed to restore strength.

✔ Scalp Imbalance

A healthy scalp is essential for healthy hair. When the scalp’s microbiome, hydration, or oil production becomes unbalanced, several symptoms may appear:

  • Hair thinning or slowed growth
  • Excessive oiliness or dryness
  • Dandruff or flaking
  • Irritation, sensitivity, or inflammation
  • Weakened follicles leading to increased shedding

Factors contributing to scalp imbalance include harsh shampoos, stress, hormonal changes, product buildup, pollution, and inadequate scalp care.
